In recent months, there have been increasing reports of peaceful protesters in Türkiye being arrested and held in custody, including students and young people participating in demonstrations to exercise their fundamental rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Serious concerns arise when individuals with critical health conditions, such as Ms Esila Ayık, are detained in conditions that may endanger their lives, in violation of international human rights standards to which Türkiye has committed itself, including under the European Convention on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The European Union has consistently emphasised the importance of respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic values in its relations with Türkiye.

In the light of these worrying developments:

  • 1.Can the Commission specify what steps it has taken to raise the situation of peaceful protesters currently held in custody with the Turkish authorities?
  • 2.Has the Commission sought specific guarantees regarding the conditions of detention and respect for the rights of detained protesters, particularly those with urgent medical needs?
