The fourth meeting of the Mattei Plan for Africa steering committee was held at Palazzo Chigi today, chaired by the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni.
The meeting was attended by the members of the Government forming part of the steering committee, the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces and ANCI [National Association of Italian Municipalities] as well as a wide range of representatives from the ‘Sistema Italia’, public bodies and state-owned enterprises, the world of universities and research, the third sector, cooperation organisations and trade associations.
During the meeting, and ahead of its subsequent submission to Parliament, the draft of the second annual Mattei Plan for Africa progress report was presented, which describes the main initiatives currently underway.
It was also noted that the Mattei Plan has now been expanded to five new nations (Angola, Ghana, Senegal, Mauritania and Tanzania) and that the new financial instruments created to support the Plan are now fully operational.
Lastly, in the context of the internationalisation of the Mattei Plan, there was also an in-depth discussion on strengthening collaboration with the European Union’s Global Gateway. In this regard, President Meloni announced that a summit will be held in Rome on 20 June, which will be co-chaired by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and which will be attended by the African nations involved in the Lobito infrastructure project and international financial institutions.
