Written question – Impact of overregulation in the technology sector – E-001862/2025

Question for written answer  E-001862/2025/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 144
Piotr Müller (ECR)

In its draft international digital strategy, the Commission sets out an ‘unprecedented’ simplification of the rulebook with a view to boosting the competitiveness of European tech firms.

In so doing, after years of forcing through layer upon layer of regulation, the Commission seems to be indirectly admitting that overregulation has led to a serious weakening of Europe’s standing in the global tech race.

In light of this:

  • 1.Does the Commission accept that its previous approach of overregulating the technology sector was wrong and actually counterproductive?
  • 2.What specific remedial action does the Commission intend to take to swiftly restore the ability of European firms to compete effectively on international markets?
  • 3.Has the Commission carried out an analysis of the losses, delays and missed opportunities resulting from the former regulatory overload? If so, will it publish an estimate of the impact of its previous approach?
