Question for written answer  E-002002/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Anthony Smith (The Left)

Several Member States have already established a national day of remembrance in honour of the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Italy, this day is observed on 18 March, in Spain on 16 July and in Slovakia on 6 March.

To date, no similar initiative has been launched at EU level, despite the profound impact the pandemic has had on all the peoples of Europe, causing more than 1.27 million deaths in the EU. A European Day of remembrance would allow us to come together to commemorate the victims, to express our solidarity with their loved ones, and to pay tribute to the carers, essential workers and citizens who braved the pandemic.

Such a day would also remind us of the lessons learnt from the ordeal, and would reaffirm our common and universal will to improve efforts to prevent and deal with future pandemics.

  • 1.Is the Commission ready to support the establishment of a European day of remembrance in honour of COVID-19 victims?
  • 2.Within what sort of framework could this European day of remembrance be established?
