Answer to a written question – Language policy in Latvia – E-001312/2025(ASW)

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union explicitly prohibits any discrimination based on membership of a national minority and promotes respect for linguistic diversity. At the same time, the legal provisions governing the use of languages fall within the exclusive competence of the Member States. The Commission also has no competence to evaluate compliance with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
