On 12 May 2025, ENVI Members discussed the draft opinion on the Future of Agriculture and the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy, highlighting the need to align the CAP with the EU’s environmental and climate objectives while ensuring social and economic sustainability
The draft opinion, presented by rapporteur Mathilde Androuët (PfE), emphasizes aligning the CAP post-2027 with the EU’s Green Deal and biodiversity targets. It advocates for positive incentives, focusing on sustainable farming practices, climate adaptation, carbon capture, and water management. The opinion calls for simplification of bureaucratic processes and streamlined environmental and sanitary requirements, supporting strategic sectors, including young farmers. It stresses reinforcing EU food sovereignty and rural resilience while enabling farmers to adapt to climate change. The draft opinion also highlights fair trade through mirror clauses and integrates environmental protection with social and economic sustainability. This opinion will contribute to the AGRI Committee’s own-initiative report ahead of the Commission’s budget overhaul, the CAP Simplification package expected by the Summer and the legislative proposal on the CAP post-2027, expected later in 2025.
