Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs, reiterated Iceland’s firm belief in the equal rights of Israelis and Palestinians to self-determination, as well as the conviction that recognizing an independent Palestinian state is the only way forward to build lasting peace and stability in the region, in her address at the United Nations high-level conference on the two-state solution.
The conference is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly and co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. The aim is to take concrete steps towards the two-state solution and the peaceful coexistence of two independent states, Israel and Palestine.

Þorgerður Katrín also met with António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, during her visit to New York, where they discussed the situation in the Middle East, Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, and the institutional reform currently being undertaken at the United Nations. The Minister will also hold a bilateral meeting with Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Palestine.
