The Commission is aware of the developments referred to by the Honourable Member.
The provisions of the European Media Freedom Act[1] aiming to ensure editorial independence of public service media providers and provision by them of a plurality of information and opinions to their audiences, in accordance with their public service remit as defined at national level, in line with Protocol No 29 on the system of public broadcasting in the Member States annexed to the founding Treaties of the EU[2], shall apply from 8 August 2025.
Member States are responsible for their cultural and linguistic diversity[3]. It follows that the legal provisions governing the use of languages fall within the exclusive competence of the Member States and must therefore be addressed at national level.
More generally, the Commission will continue to monitor developments regarding the situation of the public service broadcasters, in particular in its annual Rule of Law report[4].
For more details on the governance of public service media, the Commission refers the Honourable Member to its answers to parliamentary questions E-001788/2024 and E-001789/2024.
