MEPs from the Development (DEVE) and Human Rights (DROI) committees, led by Chair of the DEVE Committee Barry Andrews, are on a mission to Haut Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to gather first-hand information on the EU’s approach to development in a fragile context, in particular the implementation of EU-funded sustainable development and Global Gateway projects.

The mission programme will mainly focus on the EU’s involvement in natural resource management. MEPs will visit projects in the areas of mining, including the human right aspects of mining, as well as agriculture, biodiversity conservation and vocational training. The delegation will also have the opportunity to exchange on a major Global Gateway Flagship Project involving the DRC, the Lobito Corridor. During this mission, MEPs will meet with regional authorities, implementing partners of EU funded projects, actors of civil society organisations and the private sector to discuss challenges and opportunities for sustainable development and human rights in the DRC.
