Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the establishment of a European Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Accidents at Work and for the Protection and Dignity of Workers: ‘8 August – European Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Accidents at Work and for the Protection and Dignity of Workers’
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Articles 45, 145, 151, 153 and 156 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU),
– having regard to Rule 149 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas employment and the protection of workers are priority objectives of the Union;
B. recalling the Marcinelle tragedy of 8 August 1956, in which 262 miners died, including 256 from Member States of the European Union, remembrance of which continues to nourish awareness of the fundamental value of the free movement of workers, of their rights and of their safety and dignity;
1. Calls for the creation of a ‘European Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Accidents at Work and for the Protection and Dignity of Workers’, to be observed on 8 August every year to commemorate victims of accidents at work and to raise public awareness of the need for ever greater labour protection; notes that the date of 8 August has been chosen in memory of the Marcinelle tragedy of 1956, which has come to symbolise the fight for workers’ rights, safety and dignity;
2. Invites the Council and the Commission to support this initiative with a view to its joint adoption by all three institutions;
3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the national parliaments of the Member States.
