Written question – Hailstorms and their impact on farmers – E-001914/2025

Question for written answer  E-001914/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Galato Alexandraki (ECR)

Recent hailstorms in Greece (in Pella, Imathia and Larissa) have caused extensive damage to high-value orchards, such as peach, cherry and apricot trees. Despite repeated calls by farmers for the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) to immediately activate its aerial hail suppression programme, its implementation has been significantly delayed. Owing to the strict terms of the calls for tender published by ELGA on 31 December 2024 and 20 March 2025, an agreement with a contractor was not reached, leaving producers unprotected at the start of the hailstorm season. This delay has resulted in a significant loss of yield and a financial burden for farmers.

Can the Commission therefore answer the following:

  • 1.Are there any EU funds that can be used by Member States for anti-hail protection programmes in vulnerable areas to address the losses from the recent hailstorms?
  • 2.Are there any EU directives concerning the way in which such tenders should be conducted in order to ensure full transparency and specific time frames for execution?
