Highlights – Exchange of views with Commissioner Lahbib on Preparedness and Crisis Management – Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety

On 12 May 2025, ENVI Members held an exchange views with Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, as part of the structured dialogue, on her broader responsibilities in civil protection and disaster risk management and on the EU Preparedness Union Strategy

This structured dialogue marked the first opportunity for ENVI Members to question Commissioner Hadja Lahbib on the state of play, progress and outlook of her work. Appointed as Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Lahbib oversees a broad portfolio including civil preparedness, crisis response, international cooperation on disaster risk management, and equality. She operates under the guidance of the Executive Vice-President for People, Skills and Preparedness, with authority over DG ECHO and partial responsibility for HERA. Members exchanged views on her range of responsibilities and in particular in what relates to crisis preparedness and management and the work of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) and RescEU. Furthermore, Commissioner Lahbib also presented and discussed with ENVI Members the EU Preparedness Union Strategy, launched on 26 March.
