Motion for a European Parliament resolution on  case of Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran

(2025/2753(RSP))

The European Parliament,

  having regard to its previous resolutions on Iran,

  having regard to Rules 150(5) and and 136(4) of its Rules of Procedure,

  1. whereas Swedish-Iranian national Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, who specialises in emergency medicine and is a scholar at Belgium’s Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Italy’s Università del Piemonte Orientale, was arrested on 24 April 2016 by the Iranian security forces;

 

  1. whereas he was sentenced to death on spurious espionage charges in October 2017 following a grossly unfair trial based on a confession extracted under torture; whereas the sentence was upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court on 17 June 2018;

 

  1. whereas Dr Ahmadreza Djalali’s medical condition is steadily deteriorating, having suffered a severe heart attack in May 2025 and being denied medical care from outside the prison since 2016;

 

  1. whereas this case is part of a systematic pattern of unlawful detentions and hostage diplomacy by the Iranian regime;

 

  1. Calls on Iran to immediately release Dr Ahmadreza Djalali along with all political prisoners currently on death row and to halt all executions; deplores the inhumane circumstances of his detention and unfair trial;

 

  1. Condemns the outrageous allegations and charges pressed against Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, who was in Iran for legitimate professional purposes at the time of his unlawful arrest; urges the Iranian authorities to immediately drop all charges against Dr Ahmadreza Djalali;

 

  1. Deplores the Iranian regime’s refusal to provide Dr Ahmadreza Djalali with the specialized care he needs in light of his worryingly precarious medical condition;

 

  1. Urges the international community to exert additional pressure on the Iranian regime through bilateral channels;

 

  1. Strongly denounces the Iranian regime for instrumentalizing Dr Ahmadreza Djalali`s unlawful arrest within a broader pattern of intimidation and repression against academic freedom;

 

  1. Condemns the arbitrary detention of EU nationals in Iran and calls for their immediate release and repatriation;

 

  1. Reiterates its strong opposition to the death penalty and urges the Iranian Government to take all necessary steps towards its abolition;

 

  1. Condemns the Iranian regime’s use of politically motivated trials and the death sentence as a tool to suffocate any form of dissent; recalls that individual freedoms must be ensured unconditionally;

 

  1. Denounces Iran`s destabilising influence across the region and its systematic attempts to severely undermine the regional order through proxy militias, political and military interference and transnational repression;

 

  1. Stresses the importance of supporting the Iranian people’s democratic aspirations in the face of the regime’s brutal repression;

 

  1. Reiterates its call on the Council to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation and continue identifying and sanctioning Iranian officials responsible for human rights violations;
  2. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Government and Parliament of Iran.
