Question for written answer E-003096/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Dimitris Tsiodras (PPE)
The upcoming imposition of 30 % tariffs on EU exports to the US is expected to affect the competitiveness of Greek and European agri-food products, increasing costs and reducing their demand.
In 2024, these exports were worth EUR 25.1 billion, while the US market accounted for a significant part of Greek exports (EUR 633 million). To be precise, Greek exports of fruit and vegetables amounted to EUR 415.5 million, dairy products and eggs to EUR 75.2 million and cereals and cereal preparations to EUR 55.4 million, while the US accounted for 20 % of Greek fruit compote exports (with a total value exceeding EUR 100 million).
These tariffs come on top of a number of challenges faced by the agri-food sector, such as the effects of the climate crisis on yields and production.
Given the importance of this sector for the European economy, the potential impact on jobs and the economic viability of rural areas, will the Commission say:
- 1.In the context of negotiations with the US, has the necessary emphasis been put on the needs and interests of the agri-food sector?
- 2.Is it considering support measures to help affected sectors and businesses in the event that no agreement is reached by 1 August?
