B10‑0444/2025

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the ‘Stop Killing Games’ initiative

The European Parliament,

  having regard to the social campaign ‘Stop Killing Games’, which has raised awareness of the problem of the shutting down of video games,

 having regard to Rule 149 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the permanent shutting down of games by publishers after server support ends deprives consumers of access to legally purchased products;

B. whereas such activities harm the digital single market and hinder the digital archiving of cultural material;

C. whereas there is a need to guarantee citizens the right to continue to use their purchased digital goods in a proportionate and feasible manner,

1. commends the ‘Stop Killing Games’ campaign for mobilising civil society;

2. underscores the necessity of finding solutions to ensure continued access to games and other digital goods after commercial support ends;

3. calls on the Commission to initiate a dialogue with game developers, consumer organisations and civil society in order to establish minimum standards for the protection of purchasers of digital games and other digital goods.
