This week, the Commission published its LGBTIQ+ equality strategy for 2026-2030, which promotes the possibility of self-identifying one’s gender ‘without age restrictions’.

In most EU countries, minors are not allowed to make decisions with serious consequences, such as buying alcohol, voting or getting a tattoo. Nevertheless, the Commission proposes authorising children to determine their own gender, even though they do not fully understand the consequences that such a decision will have on their lives.

In the light of the above:

  • 1.How does the Commission justify making ‘gender self-identification without age restrictions’ possible when it is clear that a minor does not have the maturity necessary to make such a decisive and life-changing decision?
  • 2.How does it intend to protect the fundamental right of parents to protect their children from external pressure and inappropriate decisions?
  • 3.On what scientific and sociological basis does it argue that minors can determine their gender without age restrictions, when they do not have the right to make decisions about other fundamental aspects of their lives?
