Southern Cross Gold Consolidated Ltd („SXGC“, „SX2“ oder das „Unternehmen“) (TSX:SXGC) (ASX:SX2) (OTCQX:SXGCF) (Frankfurt: MV3.F) – https://www.rohstoff-tv.com/… – gibt die Ergebnisse von fünf Bohrlöchern im zu 100 % unternehmenseigenen Gold-Antimon-Projekt Sunday Creek in Victoria bekannt. Dabei handelt es sich um die bislang westlichste Bohrlochsequenz, die aus dem Hauptprospektionsgebiet gemeldet wurde und sich knapp 300 m westlich aller bisherigen Bohrungen befindet (Abbildungen 1 bis 5). Drei Definitionsbohrlöcher untersuchten den oberen Teil des Christina-Prospekts, und zwei tiefe Kontrollbohrlöcher definierten die Abwärtsneigung durch den Golden Dyke und Rising Sun.

SDDSC235 ist das westlichste Bohrloch, das aus dem Christina-Prospekt veröffentlicht wurde. Das Bohrloch verlief über eine Gesamtlänge von 800 m seiner 1.405,7 m innerhalb vielversprechender Gänge und alterierter Sedimente, einschließlich einer Mineralisierungszone ab 282,1 m, die 481 m mit 0,9 g/t Au (ungeschnitten) ergab und Christina in den Golden-Dyke-Korridor führte, bevor der vielversprechende Korridor innerhalb von Rising Sun in 1.010 m Tiefe definiert wurde. Die Bohrung lieferte sieben einzelne Untersuchungsergebnisse über 50 g/t Au, bis zu 496,0 g/t Au, was belegt, dass Christina ein Mineralisierungssystem von gleichem Ausmaß beherbergt wie Golden Dyke und Rising Sun. Zu den besten Ergebnissen gehört ein breiter Abschnitt von 8,3 m mit 4,8 g/t AuEq (4,8 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 708,7 m sowie ein hochgradiger Abschnitt von 0,8 m mit 141,0 g/t AuEq (141,0 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 568,9 m, beide in SDDSC235. Alle drei Definitionsbohrungen vom neuen westlichen Bohrplatz durchteuften Gold in einer Tiefe von 15 m bis 60 m unter der Oberfläche und definierten bis zu drei zuvor nicht identifizierte flache Adersätze, darunter 2,6 m mit 7,5 g/t AuEq ab 40,0 m in SDDSC220. Über die fünf Bohrlöcher hinweg lagen acht einzelne Au-Analysewerte über 50 g/t Au und vier einzelne Sb-Analysewerte über 10 % Sb, bis zu 39,50 % Sb auf 0,10 m ab 91,79 m in SDDSC235. Die tatsächliche Mächtigkeit der mineralisierten Abschnitte wird für alle gemeldeten Bohrlöcher auf etwa 40 % bis 90 % der beprobten Mächtigkeit geschätzt.

Michael Hudson, Präsident und CEO, erklärt: „SDDSC235 ist eine der wichtigsten Bohrungen, die wir bei Sunday Creek durchgeführt haben. Als westlichste Bohrung, über die aus dem Christina-Gebiet berichtet wurde, durchquerte sie über 481 m eine nahezu durchgehende Mineralisierung mit 0,9 g/t Gold (ungeschnitten) und lieferte unterhalb des gesamten Christina-Prospekts Einzelanalysen von bis zu 496 g/t Gold.

„Diese Bohrung zeigt, dass Christina das gleiche Ausmaß und den gleichen Gehalt wie Golden Dyke und Rising Sun liefern kann, und das in einem Gebiet, das wir gerade erst zu erkunden begonnen haben. In der Umgebung traf jede Definitionsbohrung vom neuen westlichen Bohrplatz aus auf Gold in einer Tiefe von 15 bis 60 m unter der Oberfläche, knapp 300 m westlich aller bisherigen Bohrungen, während unsere Kontrollbohrungen die Struktur bestätigten, die als Leitfaden für die nächste Phase der Definitionsbohrungen dienen wird.

„Mit elf laufenden Bohrgeräten, 68 Bohrlöchern im Labor und unserem 200.000-Meter-Programm, das bis ins erste Quartal 2027 läuft, gewinnt Sunday Creek mit jeder neuen Ergebnisreihe weiter an Umfang und Zuversicht.“

Vier wichtige Erkenntnisse:

1. Westlichster Step-out. Die Bohrungen SDDSC220, SDDSC232 und SDDSC235 wurden von einer neuen Bohrplattform aus durchgeführt, die etwa 300 m westlich aller zuvor veröffentlichten Bohrlochköpfe liegt, und alle drei ergaben eine Mineralisierung, was bestätigt, dass sich das System in bisher nicht untersuchtes Gebiet fortsetzt, wobei flach liegendes Gold in einer Tiefe von 15 m bis 60 m unter der Oberfläche durchschnitten wurde.

2. SDDSC235 verbindet Christina und Golden Dyke in einem einzigen Bohrloch. Das bislang westlichste und tiefste Bohrloch, über das aus Christina berichtet wurde, durchteufte 15 Adersätze, darunter 481 m mit 0,9 g/t Au (ungeschnitten) und einen hochgradigen Abschnitt von 0,8 m mit 141,0 g/t Au ab 568,9 m, bevor der vielversprechende Korridor innerhalb von Rising Sun in 1.010 m Tiefe unter der Oberfläche abgegrenzt wurde. Es ist nun nachgewiesen, dass Christina dasselbe mineralisierte System beherbergt wie Golden Dyke und Rising Sun.

3. Der Bestand an hochgradigen Abschnitten wächst mit fortschreitenden Bohrungen weiter. Fünf neue zusammengesetzte Abschnitte mit über 100 g/t Au erhöhen die Gesamtzahl des Projekts von 88 auf 93 und untermauern die Konsistenz der hochgradigen Mineralisierung über ein sich ausweitendes Gebiet hinweg. Alle Abschnitte aus Christina befinden sich außerhalb des Explorationsziels für März 2025.

4. Antimon-Gehalte in geringer Tiefe bestätigen die epizonale Zonierung bei Christina. SDDSC235 lieferte 39,5 % Sb auf 0,1 m ab 91,8 m und SDDSC220 lieferte 12,4 % Sb auf 0,2 m ab 205,4 m, wodurch sich die Vorkommen dieses wichtigen Minerals nach Westen ausdehnen.

Für alle, die es genau wissen wollen – Highlights:

– SDDSC235 – das bislang tiefste von West nach Ost verlaufende Bohrloch aus dem Christina-Prospekt, das sich durch den Golden Dyke bis in den Rising Sun-Korridor in der Tiefe erstreckt. Die Bohrung lieferte ab 282,1 m 481 m mit 0,92 g/t AuEq (ungeschnitten) (0,87 g/t Au, 0,02 % Sb), wobei sieben einzelne Untersuchungsergebnisse 50 g/t Au und eines 35 % Sb überstiegen.
• 1,6 m mit 21,4 g/t AuEq (21,3 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 246,5 m,
o darunter 0,2 m mit 156,5 g/t AuEq (156,0 g/t Au, 0,2 % Sb) ab 246,5 m
• 0,8 m mit 141,0 g/t AuEq (141,0 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 568,9 m
• 8,3 m mit 4,8 g/t AuEq (4,8 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 708,7 m (Golden Dyke),
o darunter 0,4 m mit 43,2 g/t AuEq (43,2 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 716,7 m
• 1,8 m mit 37,2 g/t AuEq (37,2 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 729,5 m (Golden Dyke), o darunter 0,2 m mit 337,0 g/t AuEq (337,0 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 731,1 m
• Zu den einzelnen Untersuchungsergebnissen gehörten 496 g/t Au, 337 g/t Au, 192,0 g/t Au, 156 g/t Au, 71,5 g/t Au, 51,4 g/t Au, 51,1 g/t Au sowie 2,9 g/t Au und 39,5 % Sb.

– SDDSC220 – die erste Bohrung, die von einer neuen westlichen Bohrplattform aus durchgeführt wurde; sie bestätigte eine flache hochgradige Mineralisierung im bisher nicht untersuchten westlichsten Bereich des Geländes, wobei eine einzelne Analyse einen Wert von über 10 % Sb ergab.
• 2,6 m mit 7,5 g/t AuEq (7,5 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 40,0 m, einschließlich 1,3 m mit 13,1 g/t AuEq (13,1 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 40,0 m
• 0,7 m mit 23,5 g/t AuEq (13,9 g/t Au, 4,0 % Sb) ab 205,2 m, einschließlich 0,2 m mit 72,4 g/t AuEq (42,8 g/t Au, 12,4 % Sb) ab 205,4 m
• Einzelanalysen ergaben 42,8 g/t Au und 12,40 % Sb.

– SDDSC232 – knüpfte an die hochgradigen Ergebnisse von SDDSC137W2 an und durchteufte die oberflächennahe Christina-Mineralisierung, bevor die Bohrung vom Ziel abwich und bei 516,5 m endete, kurz vor dem geplanten Durchteufpunkt des Golden Dyke, wobei eine Einzelanalyse 50 g/t Au überstieg.
• 1,3 m mit 4,1 g/t AuEq (1,9 g/t Au, 0,9 % Sb) ab 81,4 m
• 0,1 m mit 172,2 g/t AuEq (172,0 g/t Au, 0,1 % Sb) ab 286,1 m

– SDDSC207 – als Kontrollbohrung subperpendular zum Hauptgangtrend gebohrt, die in der Tiefe den Hauptgangkomplex „Christina“ durchschneidet und eine hochgradige Goldmineralisierung in einer Bohrung bestätigt, die ausschließlich zur Überprüfung der strukturellen Lage vorgesehen war.
• 0,2 m mit 41,7 g/t AuEq (41,6 g/t Au, 0,0 % Sb) ab 490,2 m
• 2,5 m mit 2,7 g/t Au-Äquivalent (1,3 g/t Au, 0,6 % Sb) ab 501,5 m

– SDDSC213 – als tiefes Kontrollbohrloch gebohrt, bestätigte einen vertikalen Absprung von 260 m in der Gangposition zwischen 660 m und 740 m unter der Oberfläche und lieferte wichtige Erkenntnisse für die Planung der nachfolgenden Definitionsbohrphase.

– Bisherige Gesamtzahlen des Projekts
• Seit Ende 2020 wurden von Sunday Creek 273 Bohrlöcher mit einer Gesamtlänge von 130,6 km gemeldet
• 93 zusammengesetzte Abschnitte mit mehr als 100 g/t Au bei Anwendung eines unteren Grenzwerts von 1 m (Bohrlochlänge) bei 5 g/t AuEq
• 110 zusammengesetzte Durchschneidungen mit mehr als 10 % Sb bei Anwendung eines unteren Grenzwerts von 1 m (Bohrlochlänge) bei 5 g/t AuEq
• 68 Bohrlöcher, deren Ergebnisse noch ausstehen und die derzeit ausgewertet und analysiert werden, darunter elf Bohrlöcher, die aktiv gebohrt werden, und drei aufgegebene Bohrlöcher; derzeit sind elf Bohrgeräte im Projekt im Einsatz
• Das 200.000 m umfassende Bohrprogramm wird bis zum 1. Quartal 2027 fortgesetzt

Rising production volumes, higher requirements – Industrial testing technology is becoming a key factor in defense production

The expansion of the European defense industry requires not only additional manufacturing capacity but, above all, stable, repeatable production processes. Automated leak and flow tests play a crucial role in this regard: They ensure the quality of safety-critical components, reduce scrap and rework, and provide complete quality documentation. At the Euro Defense Expo (EUDEX) 2026 (September 22–25, 2026, Essen), CETA Testsysteme GmbH will present solutions for leak and flow testing integrated into production.

Increasing production volumes require industrial mass production

The European security and defense industry is undergoing a profound transformation. As defense expenditures rise, production capacities are being expanded, supply chains diversified, and manufacturing processes scaled up to handle higher volumes. Production is increasingly shifting from a predominantly project-based model to industrial mass production.

This transformation is driving higher demands for process reliability, traceability, and reproducible quality. Thousands of identical components must be manufactured reliably, and product quality must be documented.

Quality begins in the production process

Safety-critical electronic products used outside must function reliably even under varying environmental conditions. Even the slightest manufacturing deviations can allow moisture or dust to penetrate sealed systems. This can cause malfunctions or the failure of the entire system.

For this reason, the focus of quality assurance is increasingly shifting from traditional final inspections to the manufacturing process itself. The goal is to detect deviations at an early stage and prevent defective components from entering subsequent production steps.

Leak and flow testing as a key technology in the manufacturing process

Automated and objective testing methods are becoming increasingly important, particularly in high-volume production. These methods provide measurement values for each individual component and enable continuous monitoring of production quality. This allows changes in the production process to be detected and corrected at an early stage.

Industrial leak and flow testing plays a central role in this context. Numerous components of modern defense systems must be protected against environmental influences or reliably ensure defined media flows.

Typical components are electronic control units, sensors, actuators, wireless and communication systems, monitoring systems, energy storage devices, battery enclosures, optoelectronic systems, hermetically sealed units, connectors, valves, cooling circuits, and hydraulic and pneumatic components.

Depending on the component and test requirements, differential pressure, pressure drop, flow, or mass flow methods are used. The goal is to reliably detect even the smallest leaks or to quantitatively measure flow (e.g., in valves and cooling channels).

The measurement data enable continuous monitoring of process stability and provide reliable quality verification for each individual component.

Successful testing technology starts with the right approach

However, the performance of a test device alone does not determine the success of a testing solution. Just as important are a testing concept tailored to the application, the selection of suitable measurement methods, and optimal integration into the production line.

Component geometry, material properties, leakage rates, test times, and environmental conditions must be taken into account as early as the project planning phase. Only the combination of measurement technology, application expertise, and process understanding enables stable and reproducible test results.

CETA Testsysteme GmbH – Experience ensures process reliability

Experienced technology partners play a significant role, particularly when establishing new manufacturing capacity, as they accompany their customers through all phases of the project.

For more than 35 years, CETA Testsysteme GmbH has been developing measurement and test devices for industrial leak and flow testing. CETA supports its customers from the feasibility study through the development of a test concept all the way to integration into automated production lines.

These “Made in Germany” test devices use compressed air as the test medium. Typical test pressures range from 1 bar to 10 bar. Compressed air can be used to detect leakages down to 10⁻³ mbar*l/s (depending on the size of the test volume). And with the flow testers, gas flow rates from 3 ml/min to 200 l/min can be measured.

Banyan Gold Intersects High-Grade Mineralization at Newly Identified Roaring Fork Zone, Visible Gold at Seattle Creek Zone, Nitra Project, Yukon

These intersections have potentially identified new discoveries within the Roaring Fork zone and Seattle Creek zone at Nitra, approximately 25 km west of the AurMac Deposit on claims owned 100% by Banyan with no underlying royalties. These are the first two of eleven exploration targets that Banyan has identified on it’s broader 830 sq km AurMac and Nitra land packages in the Mayo Mining District, Yukon.

Highlights from Roaring Fork Zone at Nitra:

  • NT-26-001 – 1.62 g/t Gold (“Au”) over 5.0 metres (“m”);
    • including high-grade of 17.80 g/t Au over 0.4m *

“We are very excited to report The Roaring Fork Discovery at Nitra, indicating a new mineralized system 25 km west of the AurMac footprint (Figure 1),” stated Tara Christie, President and CEO. “Diamond drillhole NT-26-001 intersected visible gold, high densities of mineralized extensional veining and high-grade gold mineralization associated with quartz veins and bismuth-sulphosalts similar to what we see at AurMac and within the top 80 metres from surface. We are also pleased to announce a second target zone approximately 5 km north at Seattle Creek, with large extensional quartz veins with multiple visible gold instances, bisthmuth sulphosalts, and sulphide replacement style mineralization of calcareous metasedimentary rocks. While it is early days in understanding the scope of these discoveries, we are seeing similar vein hosted mineralization in adjacent drillholes.”

In June 2026, Banyan announced the commencement of its greenfields exploration diamond drilling program at Nitra. The Nitra project benefits from a network of extensive roads established by previous and ongoing placer mining activities near the targets. The diamond drill program is utilizing two helicopter supported drills to minimize initial footprint and expedite testing of the targets. Over 7,500 metres of drilling will be completed to test 11 regional targets identified through new geophysical surveys, soil geochemical anomalies, knowledge of placer-mining locations, and prospecting. The objective of the program is to identify potential satellite deposits by discovering additional expressions of Reduced Intrusion-Related Gold Systems (“RIRGs”) in the highly prospective greenfields zones surrounding the AurMac deposit, where over 95% of the district-scale AurMac and Nitra land package remains untested by drilling. A third drill is being mobilized to site to accelerate the greenfields exploration program.

“The rocks at the Roaring Fork Zone and Seattle Creek have all the geologic ingredients we are looking for in our targeting,” stated Duncan Mackay, Vice President Exploration. “A difference from AurMac is the presence of highly altered and strained volcanic rocks (Figure 3), amongst the typical metasedimentary rocks of the Yusezyu Formation which are a prime host for brittle strain and quartz vein emplacement. We are seeing abundant mineralized shear veins with secondary extensional veins overprinting, and local high-grade gold with anomalous gold throughout the portion of the hole for which we have received assays (Figures 5 and 6). Numerous instances of visible gold, high-grade gold intervals, a late lamprophyre dyke (indicative of a long-lived structural corridor), and notable shear and extensional veins hosting bismuth-sulphosalts on our first, second, and sixth drillholes of the regional exploration program is very encouraging for the success of our additional 9 targets (Figures 1 and 2) generated by our team and supplemented with machine learning (AI).”

A combination of soil geochemical anomalies (Gold, Bismuth, Arsenic) and geophysical signatures (resistive anomaly) were used to identify the target at Roaring Fork Zone. These targeting indicators were combined with proximal placer mining in the creek drainage to locate and prioritize the targets. Mineralization at Roaring Fork Zone is predominantly hosted in two styles of quartz vein; cross-cutting extensional veins hosting bismuth sulphosalts, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and locally sphalerite (Figure 5), and foliation sub-parallel shear veins hosting bismuth-sulphosalts, arsenopyrite, pyrite. Quartz veins are most concentrated near the margins of deformed and altered volcanic units, which may act as rigid buttresses to concentrate mineralizing fluids and favourable local strain regimes allowing for vein emplacement. The top 300m of drillhole NT-26-001 exhibited the favourable mineralization; the lower 300m of the drillhole was extended to test additional shear veins identified during daily quick-logging and to provide greater geologic context for the area and for future drilling. Outcrop exposure is very limited across Nitra, with no outcrop within 200m of the drill collar.

Analytical Method and Quality Assurance/Quality Control Measures

The reported work was completed using industry standard procedures, including a quality assurance/quality control (“QA/QC”) program consisting of the insertion of certified reference materials, field duplicates and coarse blanks into the sample stream and utilizing certified independent analytical laboratories for all assays. Additionally, historic QA/QC data and methodology on the AurMac Project were reviewed and will be summarized in the Technical Report‎. The qualified persons detected no significant QA/QC issues during review of the data.

A robust system of standards, core duplicates and coarse blanks, was implemented in all Banyan drilling programs and was monitored as chemical assay data became available. All control samples were within accuracy and precision thresholds required to meet data quality standards. These control samples amounted to approximately 10% of all samples submitted to analytical laboratories.

All diamond drill core was systematically logged and photographed by Banyan geology personnel.  All core samples (HTW and NTW diameter) were split on-site at Banyan’s core processing facilities. Once split, half samples were placed back in the core boxes with the other half of split samples sealed in poly bags with one part of a three-part sample tag inserted within. Samples were delivered by Banyan personnel or a dedicated expediter to the Bureau Veritas, Whitehorse preparatory laboratory where samples are prepared and then shipped to Bureau Veritas’s Analytical laboratory in Vancouver, B.C. for pulverization and final chemical analysis.  

Core splits reported in this news release were analysed by Bureau Veritas of Vancouver, B.C., utilizing the four-acid digestion ICP-ES 45-element MA-200 or ICP-ES/MS 59-element MA-250 analytical package with FA-450 50-gram Fire Assay with AAS finish for gold on all samples.  Samples returning >10 g/t Au were reanalysed by fire assay with gravimetric finish on a 50g sample (FA-550). High-grade samples with documented visible gold are also analysed using metallic screen fire assay (FS-652). Samples returning >200 g/t Ag (MA250 or MA300) were analysed by multi-acid digestion ICP-ES MA370. If samples returned > 1,500 g/t Ag, they were analysed by fire assay with gravimetric finish on a 50g sample (FA550).  If samples returned > 10,000 g/t Ag, they were analysed by fire assay 2g sample (FA501). Bureau Veritas is an accredited lab following ISO/IEC 17025:2017 SCC File Number 15895. A robust system of standards, ¼ core duplicates and blanks has been implemented in the 2026 exploration drilling program and is monitored as chemical assay data becomes available.

About Banyan

Banyan’s primary asset, the AurMac Project is located in the Traditional Territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, in Canada’s Yukon Territory.  The AurMac Project comprises two main deposits, the Airstrip and Powerline Deposits. In addition to the AurMac Project, the Company holds the Hyland Gold Project, located 70 km northeast of Watson Lake, Yukon, along the southeast end of the Tintina Gold Belt (the “Hyland Project”) in the Traditional Territory of the Kaska Nations, closest to the Liard First Nation and Daylu Dena Council.The Hyland Project represents a sediment hosted, structurally controlled, intrusion-related gold deposit, within a large land package (over 125 sq km), accessible by a network of existing gravel access roads. Banyan also holds the Nitra Gold Project and Seattle-Goodman Creek Project which are grassroots exploration projects located in the Mayo Mining district, adjacent to the AurMac Gold Project. These properties lie in the northern part of the Selwyn Basin and are underlain by metaclastic rocks of the Late Proterozoic Yusezyu Formation of the Hyland Group, similar to lithologies hosting portions of the AurMac Project. Middle Cretaceous Tombstone Plutonic suite intrusions occur along the properties including the Morrison Creek and Minto Creek stocks. The properties are 100% owned by Banyan and cover over 530 sq km. Nairobi (Fides News Agency) – The 21st Plenary Assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) concluded in Nairobi, Kenya, after bringing together bishops, priests, religious, lay people and youth delegates from across Eastern Africa from July 19 to 26 (see Fides, 21/7/2026).The Assembly’s final document identifies young people as the shared pastoral priority for AMECEA over the next four years, recognizing that they are not only the future of the Church, but already an essential part of its present. The Bishops call for concrete pastoral accompaniment capable of responding to young people’s aspirations, struggles and the profound social and cultural transformations affecting the region.”We love you, we believe in you, and we invite you to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church and in the life of your respective countries,” the Bishops state in their concluding document.Among the commitments adopted are the strengthening of youth ministry offices within the Episcopal Conferences, the training of digital evangelizers, the promotion of education, entrepreneurship and vocational skills, and the reinforcement of safeguarding policies for children and vulnerable persons, particularly those living with mental health conditions.The final message also stresses the need for closer cooperation between the Church, civil institutions and regional organizations in order to encourage young people’s participation in public life, promote safe migration and address the root causes of conflict.Particularly significant is the section in which the Bishops gather the testimony of the young people attending the Assembly, who said they often feel “used during election campaigns and forgotten after the vote.” The final document therefore calls on political leaders to end all forms of exploitation of young people for partisan interests and instead pursue policies that offer hope, opportunities and meaningful participation.The message also encourages young people to become protagonists of the Church’s evangelizing mission, recalling St. Paul’s exhortation to Timothy: “Let no one despise your youth.” They are invited to allow themselves to be guided by Christ and to become credible witnesses of the Gospel in society and in the digital culture. At the same time, the Church pledges to listen to them more attentively and to involve them more fully in pastoral planning and decision-making processes.On the institutional level, the Assembly elected Msgr. Khulna (Fides News Agency) – Following the recent floods, Catholic communities across the Diocese of Khulna have opened church facilities to accommodate people displaced by rising waters, offering temporary shelter until floodwaters recede from the streets of Khulna and their homes: this was reported to Fides by Msgr. James Romen Boiragi, Bishop of Khulna, in southwestern Bangladesh, who said that “our solidarity is expressed through shelter and hospitality for vulnerable and displaced people, most of whom are poor and belong to Dalit communities.”The diocese’s approximately 37,000 Catholics are predominantly Dalits, the Bishop noted. Although Bangladesh is largely Muslim, (approximately 89% of the population), the country has retained deeply rooted social hierarchies and forms of discrimination inherited from the caste system of its Hindu past. These continue to affect Dalits, also known as “outcastes” or “untouchables”. The significant concentration of Dalit communities in the Khulna division and Bangladesh’s southern coastal belt, (estimated at around 500,000 people), reflects historical, economic and geographical factors.In the specific area of Khulna, the diocesan Caritas, led by Director Daud Jibon Das, has launched relief operations to tackle two major challenges: prolonged flooding in Khulna’s urban slums and the salinization of water reserves in coastal areas.After three consecutive episodes of severe flooding in recent weeks, many urban slums remained submerged, prompting Caritas Khulna to provide immediate assistance. As Bishop Boiragi told Fides, volunteers distributed food and hygiene kits, including rice, cooking oil and essential groceries, to families whose homes had been cut off or inundated.Caritas has also overseen the construction of emergency toilets to reduce the risk of water contamination. At the same time, the “Stronger Together” project—supported by Caritas Italiana—continues to strengthen resilience and recovery in four of Khulna’s largest slum communities through disaster preparedness initiatives and emergency financial assistance.Another pressing concern, Bishop Boiragi said, is the supply of drinking water to combat coastal salinization: in parts of Khulna District close to the coast (such as Koyra and Dacope), heavy rains and flooding have pushed seawater inland, destroying freshwater wells.Local Caritas volunteers are distributing water containers and emergency drinking water to isolated communities while promoting the installation of low-cost filtration systems capable of converting saline water into potable water in flooded villages.The Bishop also warned of another long-term consequence of the floods: severe riverbank erosion (such as the Pashur River), which is steadily swallowing up land and destroying homes. EU steps up the fight against fraud to better protect taxpayers’ money

The European Commission today published its 2025 Annual Report on the Protection of the European Union’s Financial Interests (PIF Report), introducing for the first time a comprehensive assessment of the entire anti-fraud cycle and setting out the next steps to strengthen the protection of the EU budget against fraud and corruption.  

The report marks a significant evolution in how the European Union measures its efforts to safeguard public funds. Rather than focusing primarily on fraud detection, it assesses every stage of the anti-fraud cycle, from prevention and early detection to investigation, prosecution, recovery and reporting. By bringing together information from the European Commission, Member States, OLAF and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), the report provides the most comprehensive overview to date of how the EU protects taxpayers’ money.  

The report also outlines the Commission’s plans to modernise the EU’s anti-fraud architecture ahead of the next Multiannual Financial Framework. Proposed reforms include mandatory national anti-fraud strategies, stronger reporting obligations for Member States and a review of the legislative framework governing the EU’s anti-fraud bodies to ensure they remain fit for increasingly sophisticated fraud threats.  

“Every euro lost to fraud is a euro stolen from European taxpayers. This report shows how the Union is strengthening every stage of the fight against fraud, from prevention to recovery, while preparing its anti-fraud system for future challenges. We are committed to transparency to better protect EU funds. The 2025 report is a step in the right direction.” – Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration.

The report highlights significant progress in prevention, where investment in early detection, information sharing, exclusion mechanisms and capacity building has enabled authorities to identify suspicious activity before EU funds are lost. This preventive approach reduces financial losses and limits the need for lengthy recovery procedures.  

In 2025, a total of 13,010 irregularities were recorded, amounting to €2.1 billion. Of these, 986 were classified as fraudulent irregularities, involving €274.3 million. Compared with 2024, the total number of reported irregularities decreased by 7.6%, while the amounts involved increased by 12.8%. Although the number of reported fraud cases declined compared with the previous year, the report notes that fraud affecting the EU budget continues to evolve, requiring increasingly sophisticated tools and close cooperation between national and European authorities.   

To strengthen detection further, the Commission recommends greater use of risk analysis and IT tools such as Arachne+. The report also underlines the importance of systematically referring suspected fraud cases to prosecution services and reporting them to the Commission in a timely manner 

In addition to the good news on recoveries, the report finds that progress is being made on prevention supported by a continuous stream of measures through the years at EU and national level, from stronger early-detection and exclusion mechanisms to capacity-building and improved information-sharing among authorities. Over the last ten years, OLAF and the Commission’s combined efforts have prevented more than €658 million from being unduly spent.  

The report also identifies areas where further progress is needed. Investigations remain lengthy and complex, while stronger coordination between administrative, investigative and judicial authorities is essential to improve the recovery of fraudulently obtained EU funds. Better information sharing, particularly after cases enter judicial proceedings, is identified as a key priority for the coming years.  

Looking ahead, the report will help shape the ongoing review of the EU’s anti-fraud architecture, with a Commission Communication expected in 2026 that could lead to legislative proposals strengthening cooperation between OLAF, the EPPO and other key actors involved in protecting the Union’s financial interests.

Background 

  • The 2025 PIF Report is the first to present the protection of the EU budget through the full anti-fraud cycle: prevention, detection, investigation, recovery and reporting.  
  • It introduces new performance indicators covering all stages of the fight against fraud.

OLAF mission, mandate and competences:

OLAF’s mission is to detect, investigate and stop wrongdoings related to EU funds.

OLAF fulfils its mission by:

  • carrying out independent investigations into fraud and corruption involving EU funds, so as to ensure that all EU taxpayers’ money reaches projects that can create jobs and growth in Europe;
  • contributing to strengthening citizens’ trust in the EU Institutions by investigating serious misconduct by EU staff and members of the EU Institutions;
  • developing a sound EU anti-fraud policy.

In its independent investigative function, OLAF can investigate matters relating to fraud, corruption and other offences affecting the EU financial interests concerning:

  • all EU expenditure: the main spending categories are Structural Funds, agricultural policy and rural development funds, direct expenditure and external aid;
  • some areas of EU revenue, mainly customs duties;
  • suspicions of serious misconduct by EU staff and members of the EU institutions.

Once OLAF has completed its investigation, it is for the competent EU and national authorities to examine and decide on the follow-up of OLAF’s recommendations. All persons concerned are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a competent national or EU court of law.

Europe develops a new fuel source for JT-60SA

Building a fusion reactor requires mastering an extraordinary range of technologies. From plasma heating to diagnostics and cryogenics, the engineering challenges are many and demand deep know-how. Research has laid much of the groundwork, but it is industry that must turn the concepts into components at scale. Through its contribution to ITER or JT-60SA, Europe is closing strategic gaps. Fuel sources are a prime example.

The powerful fusion reaction runs on hydrogen isotopes, which need to be continuously replenished. In devices like JT-60SA and ITER, operators will use a Pellet Launching System (PLS) to refuel and control the plasma instabilities. The PLS consists of three parts: an extrusion system to produce frozen hydrogen pellets, a centrifuge accelerator propelling them to high speeds and a transfer system injecting them into the plasma.

In Europe, these technologies have been developed by laboratories like CIEMAT, CEA, HUN-REN or IPP. However, the industry’s experience is so far limited, as F4E’s Fuel Cycle Mapping report pointed out. In this context, Fusion for Energy (F4E) is engaging with companies to build Europe’s supply chain and deliver new reactor-scale fuel sources.

JT-60SA, the world’s largest active tokamak, presents a unique chance to do so. In its next upgrade phase (after the upcoming operations), Europe and Japan will add a PLS to the device. In 2023, F4E signed a contract with Sener to manufacture the centrifuge accelerator. The firm, an aerospace supplier, completed the component in under three years. The 5-metre-long centrifuge is now at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), where it will later be integrated and tested with other PLS parts.

“Our close collaboration with IPP was essential. We leveraged their expertise in previous generations of centrifuges to modernise the technology and deliver a system capable of very high performance,” explains Nandor Hajnal, Technical Officer for F4E. The centrifuge is designed for rapid and precise fire: using a rotating arm, it can accelerate up to 80 pellets per second, at speeds of up to 600 metres per second.

“We’re delighted to see the development of the pellet centrifuge accelerator come to fruition. Beyond its potential in fusion, this product also contributes to advancing key technologies relevant to other strategic markets, such as space, particularly for high-performance satellite momentum wheels,” says Joan Manel Casalta, Head of Science Programmes at Sener.

In parallel, F4E has kicked off the procurement of the extrusion system for JT-60SA, offering a new opportunity to strengthen Europe’s know-how in fusion fuel-cycle technologies.
